The 'horrid nightmare thing' being the Datatool alarm?

Otherwise known as the immobiliser?
Seems to have worked.

I'll show myself out.  :D
;D ;D ;D

The 'horrid nightmare thing' being the Datatool alarm?
Yes.
My insurance company insisted on a Thatcham approved immobiliser being fitted,(as the BMW OEM immob is not Thatcham approved).
Two immobilisers on the same bike was never a good idea Imo,and I was surprised it took this long for the issue to arise.
I've since been surprised to find that Datatool do not enjoy a glowing reputation amongst those who repair motorcycles.

Update for anyone interested:
Just got the bike back,(at the second attempt)
Took it over to Steve at Motoscot, left it with them, they diagnosed it as a Datatool problem but came up with a workaround that APPEARED to by-pass the fault.
Collected it,got about 3 miles and the bike died again, same EWS/EML lights as before.
Luckily the missus was still following, the Motoscot guys came for the bike and I left it with them to do whatever was necessary.
Removed the horrid aftermarket nightmare thing, all good now...no issues whatsoever.
Thank you Motoscot...

Talked with my trusted mechanic and he  suggest a visit to a dealer with a pic since he said the fault of EWS would click an interim fault code viewable to pc.
Oh not the stealers....
Ho-hum...it's only money I suppose...*sigh*....

My mind goes to the electric swich in the power cable.
This is a part of the hot start harness that should have been changed by your dealer long time ago at no cost.
Next is the switch. Same as above .
Costas, thank you for that,I'll have to borrow a manual to find where this switch is located.
As my bike still has the intermittent,"hot start",issue,i imagine that the replacement harness has never been fitted.
Funny thing ,my Ducati ST2 also had the same intermittent hot starting issue ,but afaIk Ducati never did anything about it.
I bought an upgrade kit offf a Ducati forum seller,it was thicker battery to solenoid/solenoid to starter cables.Sorted it straightaway.

Hi All.Long time/no post...time goes by soooo fast, and I have no excuse for this forum being my first port of call for today's problem with my K1300GT.
Pulled away from car park,(St Ives Motorcycle Festival),15mph not really gunning it,engine just cuts out...nothing else, just the motor, immediate EWS warning and EML symbol on the display.Won't turn over, strangely the alarm messed about for a bit too,i.e,could turn it off on the fob but a few seconds later it would wail again.Until after a few minutes then it stopped and went back to normal.
But still no engine turn over or start and warnings on the display.
Dropped the battery earth for a couple of minutes,no change.
Removed the fuse on the Datatool alarm/immob,(fitted alongside the BMW version as demanded by the insurance company)
Recovered home, will call Steve at Motoscot in the am unless anyone has any suggestions.
Btw,my bike still has the hot start issue intermittently, when it happens I just patiently wait for it to start rather than beg BMW to sort out an issue on an 8 year old bike.
TIA,
Lance

Disc is mullered,(I could tell that),but caliper has also overheated to the extent that Steve is not confident that a rebuild would make it usable.
(It is now an attractive light gold colour due to the roasting....)
A new caliper is 800 bucks on the BMW-USA price list,so he's trying to find a good,"pre-enjoyed",item.
However, the cost of the repair is nothing compared to the torture of riding his CB500 loan bike the 32 miles home.
Seat so soft it feels like sitting on the frame rails....knee ache after 27 miles....no wind protection....gutless unless you wring it's nuts off...front brake feels like grabbing a handful of rice pudding and finding a stone in it....if I had to ride one of these as a learner it would put me off bikes forever.
It better be economical otherwise I really won't develop any feelings for it  :'(....and I love anything with two wheels and an engine...my "collection",bears witness to that particular flaw in my character  8)

We had ridden several miles of freshly dressed road on the way to the airfield too...
Oh well,it's only money.... 8)

There is one other thing that happened to me on my GT and that was a pebble had got jammed around the brake pedal area, there is a part of the pedal that has a sort of scooped area that can hold a stone, if that makes sense.
That happened to me once Tim. I had only read about it the day before, so went straight to it and got the stone out with a key.

And I think Ive heard of others Rae, including someone on the old site whos Dealer couldnt even find the problem and changed the master cyl before it was diagnosed. Here is my theory as to how it happens. Its not a pebble/stone thrown up but one that has been stuck on the sole/heel of your boot and then drops off into the perfectly designed stone capture area :(
Bastadbastadbastadbastad..................a tiny little dull grey stone jammed under the pedal, still got sticky tar on one side from the surface dressing.....I would never, repeat never, have thought of looking under the pedal for the cause of the problem...thanks fellas  :(

Fingers crossed it's not the ABS unit.... TLA's are invariably expensive...
I don't get it either...at first I thought maybe a stone had jammed between the disc and a pad, unusual but not unheard of,(on trucks anyway).
Like I said,I don't feel i can lay it at BMW's door unless Steve finds it's been put back together incorrectly, but if that was the case the problem would have manifested itself pretty smartly?
No ones hurt though,so it will only be financial pain...and I can get him to have a look at the charging system/test the battery while it's over there, try to work out the no-start-after-stalling/SatNav-constantly-turning-itself-on-and-off issues.
And it's not like I don't have other bikes to ride  8)

So I'm bimbling about Essex earlier, having a lovely time at not-illegal speeds, and we decide to go to Stapleford aerodrome for coffee and cake.
On arrival at the car park I find it hard to pull away,so when parked I bung it on the centre stand to find the back wheels a bit stiff, and the disc is a bit warmer than normal.
"No worries,it'll cool down while we scoff our buns",I nonchalantly explained to my Triumph-riding brother as we ambled to the Caff.
Sure enough everything was rosy when we returned to the bikes, except the back brake pedal didn't seem to move very much.
Time to practice my advanced riding skills without using the brakes at all,I decided.
All went well until we got into Ongar, slowed on the engine braking almost to a complete stop, and the back wheel seized solid...just like that.
No amount of clutch slipping/engine screaming would move it,so switched off,and brother and I had to physically lift the bike off the road.
Put it on the side stand and the bastard brake  started smoking like a coal fired chimney....
RAC called,("exceptionally busy",naturally),rang Steve at Motoscot,he agreed with my suspicion that when BMW fitted new pads they hadn't left enough room in the reservoir for the fluid to expand.
EXCEPT...well... that was a few weeks back, and I must have done at least 300 miles since then...and in hotter weather too.
Sooo...got a cloth and whipped off the reservoir cap, didn't seem too much fluid in there to me but hey ho,the cloth sucked some out.
Front brake lever...normal..
Rear brake pedal...straight down and stayed there, like stepping on a plum...and then my bro points out there is now fluid gushing from the caliper all over the back wheel...ah friggin frig frig...
I imagine the heat from the disc,(ruined, and still too hot to touch after the above shenanigans),has buggered the caliper seals.
Home now,and it'll be in the back of the van to Luton tomorrow for a new disc and caliper rebuild at the very least.
Is it worth me giving Balderstones both barrels? I don't feel like it,because of the time and miles elapsed, but what else could have caused it?
Over to the panel....

As a devotee of the K12S, methinks that Tom is in no position to offer biased opinions on the status of your new toy Ron  ;D

Brian (who doesn't think the OEM TPS is a 'must have' as the jury is still out on what it costs to maintain long term)
Both my 1300 GT and my KTM both have TPM.
To be honest I don't know how to find the readout on either of them-I generally check the tyre pressures before I go for a bimble, and I've never failed to notice when they've gone down a bit
I'm sure it's a good idea, but I can take it or leave it myself.
