Bargain K1300S Motorsport?
« on: November 29, 2023, 05:15:45 pm »
At risk of devaluing my own bike, this seems to be a bloody good Motorsport, if anyone's looking in this grim early winter:
https://www.wiganyamaha.co.uk/used-motorcycle/bmw-k1300s-motorsport-2014-50887

Sports pannier, tank bag, hugger, centre stand and MRA deflector thrown in.

[EDIT: sold, says Forcefield, if you've come here all excited!]

Barging price and five previous owners gives an average of just over 21 months each, mmmmmm I suggest you keep the lock on your wallet with this one Brian.

My experience of Ks (4th owner, 3rd owner, and right now 5th owner) is that they seem to get bought by people in some sort of dream state, and then they find it doesn't fit their riding style/stature, etc.

Or maybe they only rode the bikes in summer and got hot start problems? That's the one shared weakness I've had, and it would confuse (and seriously p*ss off) an inexperienced owner.

At 20k miles is low mileage for a 7 year old bike, IMHO. And it has full service history.

Blimey, I'll be buying it at this rate...

I cannot understand the mentality of someone that buys a motorbike then does not ride it. Especially when five in a row of them do it!

They probably buy it, try it and frighten themselves.

My two K1300Ss were a black Sport and a MotorSport! :) It's a good duo to have to make a choice from.  If you can, do the radiator test detailed in the buying guide, That's the thing most likely to cause pain within a year or so of buying a bike of that age.
Correct rear brake use is scientifically proven to shorten stopping distances in EVERY road situation.

Thanks!, Am going Friday now as have booked in to see this one on the same day-

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/bike-details/202311244254151?sort=distance&advertising-location=at_bikes&make=BMW&model=K1300S&postcode=wa45hj&fromsra

The black one is due its 18,000 valve clearance check at a cost of around the £500 + mark I believe at BMW Motorrad. Could be a negotiating point

P.S dont for get to check the ESA pre-load works with the engine running, you can feel the ride height change.

That sounds like a cop-out by the cops. So, I only have four years to go before I can ride round knocking youngsters off their bikes and getting away with it 'cos I'm too old to prosecute'?

I had a good look at the one in Wigan, just in case, but the clutch cover and rear drive hub seemed to be badly affected by the rot under the paint, which, along with the front wheel carrier (forks in non-BMW speak) is the one thing that lets the looks of the K down. I know they can be touched up (OK, a major strip down and full repaint) but mileage and condition are the big things for me after a full BMWSH.

It is getting difficult to find ones in really good condition but the black one does look very tidy. And it is the fastest colour by far...

Good ones are getting rare, agreed. Sub-10k miles is unusual, but you do have to consider whether you want a bike that's been sat mostly unused - perished rubber, possible moisture, etc.

On the plus side, Ks are becoming very affordable compared to Euro 4 bikes, i.e. 2017 onwards. Yes, the tech is 14 years old, but it's still usable. The power is abundant, the handling is plenty good enough for the road.

£5-6k for a well sorted 175 bhp bike is something of a bargain. I just have to keep repeating the mantra:
'I don't need a spare just in case. I don't need a spare just in case...'
