But, I remember spectating on the caravan rally many years ago. Not some 'turn up and pitch up' weekend away, more a small version of the RAC rally with race-prepped caravans being towed through soecial stages behind full-house works rally cars.

I seem to remember Tony Pond rolling the caravan onto its side and getting out and kicking it cos it lifted his tow-hitch three feet off the ground, complete with the back end of his iirc Rover P1 'tow car'!
Yep a cardboard box sat on a chassis and A frame.
As I have grown older, I've learned that pleasing everybody is impossible, but pissing everyone off is a piece of cake.

Always admire the interior design , use of space and ergonomics of caravans.
Embrace the wind.

I never really 'got' caravans.

Hired a camper van many years ago to follow the RAC rally round Britain. A professionally converted Ford Transit 3 litre V6. Slept four of us, complete with air conditioning, central heating, double glazing, cavity wall insulation, great kitchen and a reasonable shower/loo cubicle AND a heated cupboard for drying wet towels, walking, swimming, spectating clothes etc.

We could get right into the stages; if a car could get there, so could we. Walk into the action then get the bacon sarnies on before leaving for the next stage. The looks on the faces of those poor saps in cars as they trudged past soaked to the skin while we dried our things in total luxury was a picture  8)

The beast could out accelerate most things on the roads and scared more than a few competitors in the twisties!

Brian (who thinks it was the acceptable face of 'caravanning' but recalls it averaged 9mpg for the two weeks we had it  :( )
