Title: Payback
Post by: Sutty on June 09, 2018, 03:47:01 pm
Hello guys, if any of you need small parts turning up I can offer you that service. I built a small machine shop when I retired, with a nice little lathe and universal miller, Both made in England, there'd be no charge just the cost of the material and postage.
I know sometimes we need little brackets or mounting posts or such like made.
I reckon this forums already eventually saved me the cost of a new radiator so i feel it's the least i can do.

 Best regards   Mick

That's very kind of you Sutty.

I'd offer my 3D printer on a similar basis but I'd need to be supplied with the model!

That is very kind of you Mick. I might take you up on that sometime.

When I was in the aircraft industry at Rolls Royce, I could get all sorts of parts machined, but sadly not any more.

I do love the old style machine shops.. I remember taking many a cylinder head in to get it skimmed and valve guides renewed

Cheers Rob, my millers not quite big enough to skim a head but I have some fly cutters and a nice little boring /facing head for facing out the bottom of awkward holes.

I have a Chester Conquest mini lathe but no milling machine, I'd love a milling machine but my double garage is pretty full of other machinery and finding somewhere to put a milling machine would be difficult  :-[

I know the feeling well Rae, I bought a really nice Harrison M250 that was from a school and they only let the students turn nylon and wood on it, it's in first class nick and well within .0005" over a  10' length. I also managed to find a very nice Tom Senior M1 that I fitted a 3 axis DRO to. Both a pleasure to use. It came with a Senior dividing head and I've since acquired a Slotting head for it.

I would have to get rid of my cast iron table saw, router table, bandsaw, Festool mitre saw bench and a whole host of other carpentry and woodworking tools to fit in anything else in.  ;)

And that's all under the seat, Rae?

Or am I on the wrong thread again? ;D

I don't keep woodworking tools under the seat Rich, just the microwave, toaster and a Z bed
Title: Re: Payback
Post by: Sutty on June 11, 2018, 06:01:02 pm
I'd love a decent sized shop, I had to put my Emco bandsaw on wheels and build a small annex on the shed to house it. I've spent the last 4 or 5 years building half scale cars for the grandkids and in the process had to build several machines, ring roller, English wheel, bead roller, louvre press, thumbnail shrinker, then had to rent a garage to store them in. Plus storing the cars cos my daughter says she has no room.

...and from the other side of this dilemma...

About 2-3 years ago when I couldn't get in my guest bedroom for stuff that 'should' have been in the garage I didn't have and couldn't get into the summer house for stuff that 'ought' to have been in the workshop I've never had, I had a monumental clear out, gave stuff away and eBay'd perfectly good things like router tables and ginormous WorkMates.

Three months later I decided to move home and now have a 6m by 3.5m garage cum workshop!

Oh, and nothing to put in it...

I do have 3 garages as well but the bike lives in one that I use as a welding come workshop. The war departments transport in one then the other is like a machinery store, It would be heaven to have a shop that size.
When I want to put the bikes on the lift I have to shuffle everything round.

Hi Mick, what about knocking up a blank for the rear diff/wheel? I was thinking nothing fancy, even leaving it blank so I could put a BMW emblem sticker in the middle? I could supply some stainless threaded bar for the center or stainless bolts/cap heads/domed nuts etc (I work as an engineer in the food industry, so have an abundance of stainless bits and pieces).
What ya reckon?

Hello Bian, are you talking about the hole in the centre of the rear wheel shaft ?

Mick
Title: Re: Payback
Post by: Phmode on June 17, 2018, 06:54:39 pm
Actually, I think a lot of us would pay a little for one for end of the hole...

But, um, not me, I use my big shackle lock through there... ::)
Title: Re: Payback
Post by: Sutty on June 17, 2018, 07:41:22 pm
Brian, where do you store the lock on your bike? I struggled to find somewhere to fit an Optimate phone charger on mine.
If it was the centre hole I thought about keeping the plug in with an "o" ring and just push it in.
I had a quick look on the net and they want over £60 for them.

Regards.  Mick
Title: Re: Payback
Post by: Phmode on June 17, 2018, 08:58:06 pm
I don't...

I use the Abus Granit in the garage along with an Oxford Products front disc lock and a whopping great 19mm chain locked to an Anti-Pinch Pin through the hole through the lower frame and the other end locked to another A-PP through the grage wall.

When I travel I store the Granit in a Sport Case and the Disc Lock in its supplied bag tethered to the rear frame. Or I leave the shackle lock at home and take a big chain and lock if travelling with other bikes. The big Granit will also fit in a big tank bag.

I work on the principle that if they want it they are going to have it, along with my garage wall when at home and when away from home I only have to do the equivalent of running faster than you, not the hungry lion, in other words make it more secure than the next bike along.

The big scam in Reading a few years ago was aralditing the lock on your chain. You come home from work on the train, call the breakdown service who tackle the lock and chain and the next morning at the station your bike has no security and they nick it then. One guy spent two days in a sleeping bag under the arches, playing at being homeless, watching his bike until the thieves arrived in a van and then he smashed them with a baseball bat and slashed their tyres all while calling the law.

Neat...
Title: Re: Payback
Post by: Sutty on June 17, 2018, 09:16:44 pm
Seems fair to me !!!
I have a decent chain and lock for when we're away but they have to travel in the tank bag.
You're right about if they want it they'll have it. With the advent of battery powered tools (angle grinder) and ultra thin cutting discs they can cut most locks off in seconds.

Title: Re: Payback
Post by: Bian2512 on June 18, 2018, 04:05:14 pm
Hi Mick, yes the whole through the final drive. A disc one end with a shaft fixed to it, then a disc with a hole the other end, then a bolt through the disc to fix it all in place.......simples  ;D
Is this something you think you could knock-up?
Regards
Bian
Title: Re: Payback
Post by: Sutty on June 18, 2018, 07:54:15 pm
Hello Bian, that wouldn't be a problem. But an "o" ring would hold the caps in I think without the need for a bolt or tools to remove/replace. They could be recessed to take the Bm logo or whatever you wanted  to fit. There's some 45mm dia emblems on fleabay for a fiver.
I have a couple of jobs on but I'll check it out.

Regards.  Mick
Title: Re: Payback
Post by: Bian2512 on June 18, 2018, 08:34:00 pm
That sounds awesome.
I assume they would be fixed together, so all you would do to install is push it in from either side until it’s flush with the wheel/final drive?
What sort of cost do you think? Rough figure, won’t hold you to it.
Also did you want me to get the logo’s, and send them to you before you start?
Regards
Bian

I'v ordered  a BMW steering wheel emblem thats 45mm in dia, I'll have to see how well it stands up to the elements. It's no problem turning up a top hat bush and setting the badge into it.
I'll post some pix when I've done it.

Post by: Sutty on June 22, 2018, 12:47:36 pm
Had an hour this morning to have a go at the wheel centre. I had some 75mm dia black Nylon and it hasn't come out too bad. I don't like the BM logo, it's too small and the wrong colour, should be blue and white. The carrier seems to work ok and we're off to meet Phmode tomorrow so that'll give it a bit of a trial.
The drive side will be a bit more challenging I think,,,, unless you know better !!!!

I agree that it should be blue and white. If you want a challenge, how about making one that stays the right way up, rather than rotating with the wheel.

Er, no! Only options are Save Image or Copy.

Apple really can be ar5eholes sometimes. Why cripple a useful feature like long press?

Download Google Chrome from the app store. You don't need to log in to Google to use it - stay anonymous.
Repeat test:
- long press -> Open image
or
- long press -> Open image in new tab

In the 2nd case the tab will be opened behind the one you're reading.
Look top right - there will be a number - that's the number of tabs. Tap the number and pick the tab you want to view.

Either way, the image will be fitted to screenwidth.

Hello guys, Well the ride out to Doms bike stop went well as did the bacon buttie and the chance to chat to Brian and Andy. I checked the the wheel centre disc when i pulled up and all was well,,,, Not when we got home though, I'd glued the BMW logo in with No nails, supposed to stick anything to anything,,,, not so. The logo had disappeared when we got home. ( i didn't like the colours anyway)  So it's back to the drawing board.

 Best regards   Mick
Title: Re: Payback
Post by: raesewell on June 23, 2018, 04:07:13 pm
No nails is a brittle adhesive, numberplate tape would be a better choice.
Title: Re: Payback
Post by: Sutty on June 23, 2018, 06:06:16 pm
Rae, it had self adhesive Tape on it but I didn't peel off the backing paper, the logo was curved but I bored the recess flat. The no nails is still in the nylon centre so I think it was the non stick backing paper that the no nails wouldn't stick to.  At least the  the mounting stayed in.

Regards. Mick

Gotcha, but I still think that numberplate tape would be the way to go if the Original self adhesive tape is not up to the job.

Hello Jon, I did look in the past at buying an old pantograph engraver to make some scaled down number plates for the Willys but I found a guy in Ireland who makes them. I think the numbers (patern) is CNC'd out then the recess is filled with resin  and polished off. he made a cracking job, I think the two plates were about £50, but it sets the Jeep off a treat.
Now you've reminded me I'll send him a drawing and see what he says.

Halfway through !! a little more expensive than Ian's plug but I like it. I've made the plug from aluminium and left a 6mm  threaded boss in the middle to secure the other side plug to. It's quite firm with just the "o"ring holding it but there's no way of prising it out so if I make the other side screw in I can undo it a bit and use that to push the offside one out enough to release it .

If it's not for profit (i.e. 10 or 20 for this club at cost price), and there's no perceived 'damage' to the owner of the trademark, then no-one will care.

Hello guys, I'm not too sure how the copyright laws work or if BMW would be bothered, after all it is on a BMW. I hope I am ok because I did a Bugatti badge as well.  I certainly wont be producing them commercially. The disc cost me £40 + postage, the ally about a fiver, an hours machining. The one on my bike Has been in for over 100 mls and still looks good. I haven't got round to the other side yet.
The guy in Ireland makes all sorts of badges and logos and has gone from strength to strength since I first used his services.

It's my GT that has corrosion inside the axle - now fixed with some Ford Starlight Silver spray paint I had lying around....

I suspect that TWO endcaps will indeed trap moisture - just have one on the FD side? The other side is behind the humungous silencer on my GT so can be left open to breathe!

Hello guys, I did check the inside of the axle after I read about the corrosion but it was fine.
The caps are held in with just an "o" ring, I had to put some small vents in the drive side one to stop the expanding air pushing it out, did a couple of hundred miles toda, the drive just gets warm so if there is any condensation in there it will soon dry out

Regards.   Mick

Pedant mode activated! Warm air can hold more moisture (just ask my... garage) :P. And yeah i'm ignoring any air movement that will probably make it all nice.

Expanding foam is the answer!

Fill it with the stuff. I've invested in two cans for my tyres so no punctures for me on this year's Wrinklies.
