One for the tin boxers among us...
« on: September 21, 2018, 10:31:35 am »
'New 'Yellow Vulture' speed cameras can detect if you're on your mobile phone.
New "yellow vulture" speed cameras are being rolled out in the UK. Motorists pictured eating or smoking behind the wheel, or using their mobile phone, will be slapped with a £200 fine and 6 penalty points. Currently, the yellow vulture speed cameras have been set up along Gdynia Way, which leads into Plymouth city centre in Devon.'

This from the birminghammail.co.uk via this week's PocketGPSWorld newsletter.

Forewarned etc...

I haven't had my PocketGPS newsletter for a while but I am still subscribed according to the website. When did you get your Brian?

Just this morning. They used to be quite regular but have been a little hit and miss over the holiday season. The newsletter is a one man show I believe.

And here's what they look like. The last picture shows the cameras and LEDs in combination:
https://www.devonlive.com/news/devon-news/plymouth-gdynia-way-speed-cameras-1998182

"The LED equipment are positioned 20 yards prior to the cameras - which now face oncoming traffic."

I do like front-facing cameras. At least it gives me a fighting chance on a K.

Note: they're average speed cameras.
Oh, not they're not, sorry. They're 'whatever we want to record' cameras. Hmm.

If you look carefully at that picture from Devon there are 3 cameras mounted on the gantry.

Two are facing forward & one backwards.

So I would guess bikes will be captured as well on the rear facing camera.
I certainly won't be putting it to the test.

I've noticed a lot of these average speed cameras have forward & rear facing now.

Keep your eyes peeled.

And while we're talking about speed cameras, I only noticed these on the motoroways in the past year (M6 & M20 in my travels):

I tend to look for camera hardware on the top of the gantry, but these are off to the side, and considerably smaller than they used to be.
At that size, even though they're yellow, you're unlikely to see them.

Keep your eyes peeled...

The ones on the M20 went live a couple of years ago. I got clicked (without noticing them) a month before the penalties started going out.

The answer is a subscription to PocketGPSWorld speed camera database and a decent sat nag...

...or don't do anything wrong on the roads  ;D
