Would you buy from this dealer?
« on: May 29, 2024, 10:24:00 am »
I was seriously impressed…until I read the description of this 1600GT for sale!  ;)

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/bike-details/202405240067468?sort=price-asc&advertising-location=at_bikes&keywords=reverse&make=BMW&model=K1600GT&postcode=OX16%200NN&price-from=500&fromsra

Spot the deliberate mistake in the listing although he may have seen the error of his ways by now…

Probably not. Chain and sprockets? Last serviced 3 weeks ago (on a bank holiday, though perhaps not in Scotland) since when it's done 1300 miles? Fair bit of corrosion on the caliper bolts, etc. Offside foglight bracket is bent. Rear tyre might be excellent but only looks good for 500 miles or so.

For a K16 I think you'd be better off sticking to approved used from a BMW dealer.

It is a cut and paste job. Simples!

When I was searching for the K13, even BMW dealers struggled on the phone to tell me the actual spec of the bike they were selling. 'So, does it have shift assist?' 'Not sure...' 'Well, can you go and look?' 'It's outside...' Click!

Bike salesmen by and large, are all the pits, none intended Steve... :)

It's all good...seems I might have been a little quick off the mark as I've been in touch and they've given me a good price on a chain & sprockets for my K1300GT and a Forum discount of 50% for any BMW K-bike... 8)

It is in a bloody showroom - yours!

To be fair it's not a bad price for the year and mileage, if it has a full BMW service history (of two whole services). It's slightly less than a K1300s would be if they were still made in 2018.  :'( :'( :'(
Strange how only one caliper is rusty, the other is fine. Someone forgot to clean it before the photo shoot?

71 flipping photos. The traditional 3 or 4 that BMW would do is too few. 71 is too many. Double hilarious that he starts his own listing with "50+ images"

Where do I start? This is the most impressive spec I’ve ever seen on any motorbike!
Wowee, and everybody knows words from a salesman are worth their weight in gold! (hint: words have no mass)
Also you've been going (in this guise) less than 12 months so maybe you've seen 6 bikes :D.

Love the chain and sprockets bit.

STORY: , The bike is stunning and presented very well. I’d be surprised if you find any K1600 GT Sport out there with this spec and mileage in better condition and some say I am critical., Is there going to be anything you are going to turn up and complain about, I doubt it.
That's not a story!

Isn't... isn't it... isn't it in a showroom?

Sheesh I love reviewing text!

Also no way i'm riding my bike into that forecourt. It looks like it's going to be nail city boys, nail city!

Don't believe you. Pants on fire, etc.

Although, with its reverse gear you'll have no problems parking in your garage. So maybe you're not joking. Hmmm. They go well enough too.

Was it more or less easy steering/agile than the K1300S, Rich?

I imagine it on my scale, where the GS is far left on easy to steer, the KTM a bit to the right, and the K1300 on the right... I imagine the 1600 being even further to the right.

I never noticed the 71 photos as I was browsing on my phone while eating a bacon roll at Gilks Garage Cafe but photo 53 I think shows it doing over 70mph on the side stand! Impressive  8)

And I wasn't looking because I was thinking of buying...I often take a look at the K1300GT's for sale just to make me feel good (there was a 1 owner for sale in purple very keenly priced) and for some unknown reason I occasionally take a quick peek at the K1600 also.

If I was looking to buy there was a 2019 with even less miles in black at Sytner Shrewsbury I think for a few hundred quid more that looked better than the chain & sprocket one IIRC

From the short blast I think it was an easier steer - more leverage from the wide handlebars
The only surprise was having to be careful at U-turn speeds since a) the weight b) the chunks of stuff around my feet, not quite sure where everything was c) the gravel I turned on, and finally d) it wasn't my bike.

Very comfy though. Too damned comfy. Smooth, no tractor noise like a RT, plenty of beans but more delicate/subtle than a K1300 at low revs.
I'll get a proper test ride when I can be arsed. Which won't be for another year or two.

But at least, it 'may' not look like a 250 with you on board...

Way too big for me I'm afraid. I always said I really liked big bikes because you don't get chucked around as much by the road. Honda 900, Honda CBR1000, R1150GS, K12, K13... to name the most recent. But the K16 is bigger than my car and that has stabilisers so I can do U turns with confidence and without having to paddle it round with my feet out the windows.

I know it sheds its weight when it is on the go and it could probably keep up with a K13 in the twisties, but I shed my weight when I'm on the move too...it's standing still is the problem.

But I think it would suit the IAM Instructor in you Richard  :)

Just stop with this 'It's too big/ too heavy' nonsense and buy one. It's the best bike BMW currently make. Keep the K13S too; that's great for observing an associate with an S100RR and (with the smuggler trunk thing I got from Richard) for short trips to the shops.

Agreed. It has taken me six months to get used to mine but worth every second of the effort. When on the motorway put it on cruise control and “rain” mode and the fuel consumption is similar to that of a K1300 but so much more comfortable!
