BMW extended Warranty!

So, can someone explain to me, exactly why we need an extended warranty on a bike like the K!

I wouldn't run my bike without one Brian. Over the four years I have had the bike I am about £1100 up on the work I have had done and the premiums I have paid.

The K Bike range IMHO are the best in the class, but when they go wrong and they do go wrong you need a big wedge to correct it. One reason I have sold my RS and gone for a GT 1300,it  has lows miles and FSH and is worth  putting on warranty. I paid outright for the warranty rather than monthly to save a few quid. My reasoning no finer Sports Tourer available and backed by a warranty and a service plan from Pidcocks all eventualities are covered. Will have to decide when bike reaches 30000 miles in 26000 miles do I carry on with the warranty or get rid as the ESA is no longer covered then. That will be in at least 6 years time so I will think about it then.

To even out the spend that is inevitably going to happen.
Consider it to be hire purchase for parts, Brian. Only difference is you pay up front.

You could just stash £300ish away every year, and cross your fingers that you're the lucky one. Personally, I find it easier to pay the warranty at the moment.
I'll tell you if I'm right or wrong in another 2-3 years or so!

Well I've never bought an extended warranty on anything ever and certainly not on a bike the thought of doing so on my Tiger/1100s or XT are laughable in fact the XT never went back for the 600 service I couldn't be bothered knowing that I didn't need the warranty.

Which brings me to my K do I trust it? no I don't the reason I keep it it's fast and I enjoy riding it and most importantly I can afford it anyone reading this that has caviar taste and fish and chip finance I'd head for the exit door asap.

There are several ways to own a K.

That'll be the DIY job like Tom and there's nothing wrong with that I do the same with my other bikes

The take you chance and have it dealer serviced and take it on the chin option

Or the extended warranty and that'll be the 12 month version because the pay month option isn't transferable which in my book is a major downer if you come to sell it.

BUT

It's not all bad news I've felt from day 1 of the extended warranty I've always had a better deal not only that the bike is looked after but I see allsorts of recalls etc the majority I've had done before even being mentioned on the net the cam chain tensioner and the jump guard were done years ago in fact when I asked about such in 2013 they has been done 2 years previous I hadn't asked and they didn't bother even mentioning it they were just done.

I've had 2 clutch's in 3 if you include the original it's not that they stopped working but they were like a bloody light switch and it was sorted.

If you have a 1300 then I'd say you have a sporting chance of doing without but anything earlier you out on the gang plank!!

For me the question is 'When do you stop paying'?? baring in mind in 09 they reduced the cost down by 50% down to 300 quid  :o

Oh and for those that don't know if your bike has a current factory warranty when it ends you get one invite from BM for the extended version and I mean only one turn it down and your out and there's no way back.

The only other way to have an older bikes with such is buy a bike from a BM dealer and they will put you into the scheme.

Is that really true Chris?

We had folks on the old forum, even as late as autumn last year, getting a quote for the warranty on second-hand, privately purchased bikes but with a FBMWSH and they were coming in at about the £300 mark as long as they had less than 80,000 miles on the clock at the time.

Brian (who thinks he is in pocket on the warranty vs costs front but is relying on his own DiY skills and second-hand prices for big parts like throttle bodies and exhausts (which aren't covered by the warranty anyway)  ;D )

Brian is right it is called lapsed Extended Warranty Policy and for the first year you pay a little more for it. Mileage limit 80,000 miles.

I'm about £2.5K better off through not taking out a warranty on my R bike - that includes the savings from doing my own servicing because of that. I've also factored in the cost of GS911 and special tools into that figure as well but those will have some resale value if I sell.

IMHO all you riders have a better access to a far better judiciary system that can support your demands and a faster easier access to the market of products and specialist companies, even that extended warranty is something offered there and not in the south of Europe countries (all of them).
So with a better system you can search and find more suitable solution and products to maintain at a lower cost your bimers. Until I have the same easy access to that situation I stick to my dealer, keeping my reservations (as to what the hell is doing now to me bike) to my self.
Embrace the wind.

Thats a new one on me and there's nothing in the small print that says other wise but I'll stand corrected if some one has come in from the cold for the last two years BM have been late with their renewal and when I have contacted them(2 weeks later) and they have huffed and puffed about doing it and of course on top of that the bike still has to have an annual service regardless of it even turning a wheel that calendar year.

firstly I am one who would not buy a BMW without an extended warranty though I also said I would never buy another BMW and have just done so!! I also cannot do my own servicing and do enjoy regular european trips. It is important to recognise that my warranty also includes breakdown cover within the £330 odd I pay each year.

I have saved approximately £3000 plus over the last 4 years dues to breakdowns in Europe both at home and abroad due to parts of the bike going wrong.

so will continue to pay the extra costs

My extended warranty comes in at £36.03 pm which includes breakdown cover and no excess to pay.
I've only used the breakdown cover once for a flat battery that came back to life again when the guy turned up in a totally inappropriate vehicle and then asked me, "What's the matter with this heap of shite then". Not a good start, and I complained to BMW but never heard back from them.

However, I'm sticking with it because it's still the best bike I've ever had the privilege to own and always gives me the grin factor every time, but it comes at a price. Spare parts costs are sky high so I'd rather be in the scheme than out. I wouldn't buy another beemer without a full service history, then at least you do have back up if things go wrong.

BMW used to be a word for great build quality and reliability, this is not the case now.

ChrisC, My GT1300 is an 09 and has not got a warranty, neither the original or extended. I have just put it onto a BM Lapsed Extended Warranty and as I have stated already you pay a little more for the first year then it drops to what all other punters are paying for the type of bike you own. Mine works out with European Breakdown cover at £29.00 per month. It is available to all BMW owners up to 80000 miles. My bike has got full service history, in fact I did get a quote only 2 or 3 weeks ago for my 2002 RS SE, FSH with 25000 on the clock, that worked out about £32.00. I suppose it works like all insurance policies the more the merrier as long as risk has been mitigated. The first month on a lapsed Policy the bike owner cannot claim, fair enough, once the first month has elapsed you are covered.
