Front end squeak!!
« on: October 11, 2018, 09:37:31 am »
Hello again. 2nd post, 2nd help request. I've noticed a clear squeaking when i pull the bike of tbe sidestand and especially when warm if you bounce / rock the bike at standstill. It seems to be coming from front end somewhere- anyone else had this / any ideas what to get checked out?
Cheers,
Andrew.

Front wheel bearings,  is my fisrt thought,  the ball  joints would not create any noise just  movement especially when breaking hard .

First thing to do is to eliminate brake squeak. Pull the front lever on and do your 'normal' bouncing, lifting stuff and see if it is still there. If it has gone you have the answer. If not...

The ball-joints are renowned for failing on the K but I have yet to hear one squeak.

So, to get a little more info, sit astride the bike and ease the front end up and down slowly with the front brake on. Squeaky?

Do it more vigorously. Ditto?

Wheel the bike slowly. Squeaky?

None of this is definitive but it will giive the gurus something to go on. Of course, having a glamourous assistant with a keen ear always helps in these diagnostics.

Probably a silly suggestion, but if you aren't on motorsport rear-sets, are you sure you aren't hitting the pegs with shins/boots and folding them up slightly, which could make them squeak? :D

I'm sure I had that on the old one. On this one I just hurt my legs if I catch them.

I would be looking at the shock absorber mounts top and bottom, or the wishbone mounts, if they are dry it’s a possibility

Took bike to local bmw dealer - they inspected and tried lube spray, but the mouse is still in the front end. Will be booking in when back from hols as needs to be investigated further as is rather annoying - can hear it even at / above 30mph.
Here's hoping and will update when know more.

OK. The WD40 thing was worth a try but we need to get down to nuts and bolts.

There isn't much to go wrong at the front mechanically. Apart from the dreaded ball-joints of course. Mine never squeaked; diabolical judder under high speed braking as if the discs were warped and a slow, low amplitude weave at about 30 in a straight line.

There have been odd reports of nuts, bolts and screws holding the front binnacle on being loose and causing a plasticy squeak. WD should find that.
