If you ever venture up to the wilds of Buckinghamshire my favourite powder coater is in High Wycombe (Spray Blast Engineering). Don't expect a plush business premises with chrome, coffee and free wifi though :) as its a bit "old school". I've not had wheels done by him but he has done several jobs for me including powdercoating the K1300R pannier rack. I have plans to have him do my old CB550F frame and he certainly understands how to mask off bearings etc as he mentioned this to me when I was discussing the job.

No matter what choice one makes either paint or powder coating the bearing have to come out first.

you could get away with covering over your bearing for paint, it's surprising how often an aerosol lid will fit nicely into a hub, if it's slack run a bit of tape round it so it's a nice snug fit and tap it in with the heel of your hand til it hits the bearing, i do this more for grinding in the immediate vicinity of a bearing but usually will apply a bit of paint for rust proofing and that keeps it clean. a smear of vaseline  will also protect your bearings, theres a big hgv trailer repair place not so far from me , they use bags and vaseline to protect the bearings and vaseline to protect their eyebrows....
thinking about it they had an awful lot of vaseline....

It does seem to be a trepidatious affair!

And then I read on ukgser a massive thread where the disc mounting spots has been painted and threw the disc out if alignment due to... presumably being out of spec or uneven.

So maybe this is one of those things like liposuction where the search for 'perfection' might result in more trouble/septicemia than it's worth.

Thank you gentlemen for your far cheaper and less consumerism-focused solutions :).

Powder coating can boarder on barbaric...if you want your rack doing by such fair enough, but wheels!!!!knock the bearings out and without exception painters will mask them as per.

No powder coat over spill that is then cooked in a oven at god knows what temperature and then you are left trying to get it off because of what has already been mentioned, never mind the masking is burnt too a crisp.
