New final drive.

BMW dealer fitted a new final drive to my bike on Wednesday. The paint on the old final drive was bubbling. Warranty runs out this month.

Has anyone found a way of protecting the paintwork on the final drive Tom? The corrosion normally starts near the machined edge, is there a way to protect it there maybe a carefully applied line of paint along that edge or some kind of protective film?

Apart fm a protective film by 3M cannot think of any other solution , ahhhhh yes you can always move to a southern europian country where such an issue never arose

The problem is that the corrosion starts under the paintwork thus putting anything on top is unlikely to stop the problem. BMW need to better prepare bits for paining in the first place if they want to address this issue.

My thinking was as it's a new drive it might be possible to catch it before the crud gets in there.

I have a small affected area on mine. I'd have a go at it if I could get the frame paint....

Had I kept the Blue Beauty (K12S), which had quite bad bubbling on the hub, I might have considered removing, stripping it and having it either hard anodised or powder coated.
As it was, it went the way of all flesh to make way for the Black Beast!

I originally thought that the bubbling under the paint on final drives would spread from the machined face. In my case the bubbling was away from the machined face and if it was not under warranty I would not have bothered about it. The lightly plated bore of the unit was also showing signs of corrosion brought on by last winter and the salt, despite ACF50.

Does the bubbling start on an edge or randomly anywhere?
