Non esa suspension settings
« on: May 09, 2022, 08:14:53 am »
Good morning everyone, quick question.

Going by what my handbook says about factory suspension settings, is it just a case of turning a few more clicks while riding with a pillion?

When I had my Kawasaki suspension set up at MCT, it was set up for my weight and my riding style. I said that I occasionally took a pillion so that was also allowed for such that all I needed to do when taking a pillion was add additional pre-load, primarilly to the rear. It was however, explianed that setting it up like that meant it was a compromise both when riding solo and when riding 2 up as, ideally, the dampling would also be adjusted between pillion and solo.

From that, I'd suggest that the simple answer to your question is yes, but that assumes that the factory settings are about right for you solo. I've NEVER ridden a BMW where the factory settings are right for me. Even with the ESA, I never ran the pre-load in solo mode and rarely used comfort (gentle damping) unless the road was particularly bumpy.
Correct rear brake use is scientifically proven to shorten stopping distances in EVERY road situation.

Having spent more than my fair share on aftermarket sus, good stuff is an addiction and the most important piece of kit is a pen and paper to note down ajustments so you can tinker all you like and go back to square one if you want too.

Best advice I can give is start with large adjustment,5/6 clicks at a time to understand what the hell is going and when you do, resort to the odd click or preload turn along the way, as to are Ohlins better than Wilbers blimey that’s a sure fire way of starting a domestic in our household 😀

That’s great, I’ll go down the suck it and see route. I’ll also search for a set up specialist near me, either in south Devon or near to Swansea

Many thanks 👍
