Gilks' Garage Cafe & Long Itch Diner
« on: May 05, 2023, 05:20:49 pm »
Prompted by Jacks' Hill cafe being removed from the 'Places to Eat' map, here are couple of replacements, sort of nearish but to the west:

Gilks' Garage Cafe
A far nicer place to stop than Caffeine & Machine, but small. Still run by a Gilks, 4th gen. Go out round the back for the additional seating.
Often frequented by vintage bikes and cars, as well as modern ones since it's an old Rootes garage.

Long Itch Diner
Bit more rough and ready, but there are always bikes there, and the fried breakfast looks good.
Look out for the possible mobile speed camera if leaving north towards Coventry - just 500m north in the lay-by. It's downhill and you'll definitely exceed the 30mph limit even if you entered the village exactly at 30mph!

I have updates the map Rich, I could have sworn Long Itch was on there, however, it is now along with Gilks.

You're a star sir! I might actually go to Gilk's tomorrow if the weather is blue skies.

80% chance of rain for [counts carefully] ....... 9 straight hours.
[Edit: Sunday looks a lot better. But I can't join you then, sorry.]

Jeez, 9 straight hours and then nine straight days! (you know, ignoring Sunday because it's Jesus's day)

I just used some of those fancy Vulcanet wipes to clean my wheels after KTM lubed my chain with chicken fat, so no way i'm getting these things dirty again!

Goose fat FTW!

http://www.goosefat.co.uk/page/nutrition-and-health
> Although animal fats are often considered to be ‘bad fats’, goose fat is one of the better ones and contains far fewer saturated fats than butter or lard. Goose Fat contains 32.7g Saturated Fat per 100g compared with 54g for Butter and 40.8g for Lard.

And the NHS says:
https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/eat-well/how-to-eat-a-balanced-diet/eat-less-saturated-fat/
High: More than 5g saturates per 100g. May be colour-coded red.
Medium: Between 1.5g and 5g saturates per 100g. May be colour-coded amber.
Low: 1.5g saturates or less per 100g. May be colour-coded green.

So goose fat is only 21 times over the 'low' measure.

Option 1: I'm fine with this
Option 2: No roasters for me tomorrow
Option 3: Rub into wheels, not tyres

I doubt Gilks' use goose fat for their 'Full Service' English breakfast, typeth he, trying to get back on track.
