K1200 / K1300 Forum / Michelin Road Six GT
« on: March 14, 2024, 05:30:56 pm »
I've just had a pair of Road Six GT tyres fitted to the K1300GT. Previously I was using Road Five's however the rear needed to be replaced as it was squared off (probably from the long motorway miles to visit Mother in Ross - On - Wye from Norfolk frequently) and as the Road five's seem to be out of stock everywhere, rather than fit odd tyres I replaced both.

The ride to and from the dealer was in the heaviest rain that I have seen for a long while, all in all 146 miles of misery, with the journey back being on fresh tyres too and with roads running with water.

I've just returned from a few miles on the bike in the dry and the tyres seem to be superb and so am more than pleased, despite the significant cost.

As a matter of interest, the old rear still had plenty of tread after 9000 miles, whilst the front (which was changed 3000 miles ago) was as new to look at.

K1200 / K1300 Forum / Cam chain tensioner
« on: November 03, 2023, 04:50:28 pm »
The cam chain tensioner was replaced on my K1300 GT today, as during the last service (a couple of weeks ago) there was a report of it "singing" on the overrun, although I couldn't hear it with a helmet on. It seemed to be a fairly simple job (at least it didn't take very long!).

54,000 miles on the bike now, and hopefully a good few more to come in future!

K1200 / K1300 Forum / K1300GT Service Book
« on: October 12, 2022, 05:51:24 pm »
Someone asked whether a new Owner's Handbook/Service Record Book was still available for the K1300GT.

I said that I had one ordered for next service and the person posting then asked the price, which I did not know at that time. The bike was serviced today, and I picked up the new manual at the same time. It cost £19.00 + VAT and is available through the normal channels.

K1200 / K1300 Forum / K1300GT Radiator
« on: September 20, 2022, 09:45:16 am »
I think it's time to remove and clean the radiator on my K1300GT after four years of use by me. I've no idea whether or not it's been cleaned before, however when I had the throttle bodies replaced some 6,000 miles and two years ago, the dealer said it seemed fine then. Now, however the fan seems to run for longer when it does cut in and the temperature rises quite quickly in traffic. Cleaning with the radiator in place has made a difference, however I want to ready the bike for next summer by doing the job properly. I realise that I might need to replace the radiator and have checked stock at the dealer, it is available from Germany with a 10 - day lead time.

I need to buy a suitable vacuum bleed tool (I have a compressor with a good size tank in the workshop already) and would like to ask for help with its selection, as at present I have no idea of the filler neck size on the radiator that the vacuum adaptor will need to fit to do its job. Could anyone who's done the job kindly recommend a suitable make of bleed tool or let me know the size of the neck on the radiator?

Many thanks.

K1200 / K1300 Forum / K1300GT Wheel bearings
« on: March 24, 2022, 05:33:48 pm »
I took the bike in for its new front tyre today, as it was beginning to look as though it was past its best and I did not want to have to replace it in the middle of the riding season, when dealer workshops are very busy with long waiting times.

The technician also found that the front wheel bearings were a little rough when spun, so he replaced them at the same time, under the extended warranty.

I thought that this was worth commenting on as the bike has just turned 51,000 miles and I was surprised that the warranty still covers such items!

K1200 / K1300 Forum / Clutch
« on: May 07, 2021, 08:01:37 pm »
I went to the dealer today, only to pick up a replacement pair of gloves (the dual chamber kind) that originally came with two quite different sizes between the "cool" and "waterproof" compartments. Unfortunately, the replacement pair were little better, so I chose a different type instead.

When I reached home, I gave the bike its normal wipe over and noticed a couple of streaks of oil on the left side of the tank plastics, and then when looking more closely I found a few spots on the left side of the top box. Eventually, I traced the problem to the clutch master cylinder, as much as anything because there was a "squelching" noise when I pulled the clutch lever in.

I called the Service Manager and explained the problem, to which he replied that he'd never needed to change a clutch master cylinder on a "K" series until a couple of weeks ago, when a customer turned up with the exact same situation. Anyway, it's booked in for replacement in a couple of weeks under the warranty package.

We are due to go to Wales next week for our annual visit to Radnor Revivals, so I will be taking our recently acquired Mercedes SLK that I bought for my wife a week or two back instead of the bike. I could take one of the old Honda's and I am sure that it would be no trouble at all, however my wife has vetoed that option as she says it wouldn't have enough luggage space or comfort for her!

K1200 / K1300 Forum / Switchgear
« on: February 25, 2021, 05:13:39 pm »
It appears that my left - side handlebar switchgear needs replacing again. The cruise control will engage, hold set speed and speed up using the handlebar switch, however any attempt to slow down using the switch causes disengagement and, when I try to use the resume function by moving the switch rearwards, nothing happens. All other functions work normally.

I've called the dealer who has said that the multifunction switch will doubtless have failed (it was replaced around 18 months ago, together with the right - side switchgear which was causing non - starting).

The new switch is on order, under the BMW extended warranty.

K1200 / K1300 Forum / K1300GT ESA
« on: October 17, 2020, 03:40:08 pm »
My ESA seems to have stopped working on my last run out two - up a couple of weeks ago, When I next rode the bike (solo) it felt very firm and quite harsh, whilst the ride height adjustment did not appear to do anything, nor did the damping.

Today I rode out and, after quite a pummeling on a very rough section of road, the comfort level seemed to return to normal. When I reached home, I parked using the centre stand and, by switching between the ride height modes, could see the "sleeve" over the rear spring move up and down by around 1/4" or so.

Would anyone with a GT (ESA 2) be kind enough to take a look at their bike when it is next out and confirm whether the 1/4" or so of movement that I am seeing is about the right amount?

I realise that this will not answer the question of whether the damping is changing or not, however it will at least provide a starting point for any further investigation.

Many thanks.

K1200 / K1300 Forum / Warranty
« on: September 29, 2020, 03:43:14 pm »
I've just extended the Warranty on my K1300GT for another year. I was seriously considering a change to an R1250RT after riding a dealer loan machine a few weeks ago, however having had the GT serviced last week and a fresh MOT without any problems, I've decided to stay with it as it is so very good to ride. In the past, I've sold too many bikes that I've liked and then suffered regret immediately afterward!

Valve clearances were checked in the summer (early, as the bike was apart for the throttle body replacement) and new plugs fitted, together with stick coils as well as a coolant change. Tyres and brake pads front and rear have also been replaced in the last couple of thousand miles, so I hope that next year is relatively calm as far as maintenance is concerned.

Anyone visiting mid - Wales might like to consider this accommodation, which consists of five log cabins on a non - working farm.

It is motorcyclist friendly, with breakfasts delivered to your cabin door from the farmhouse if required. There is a nice pub about a mile away for other meals and Rhayader and the Elan Valley reservoirs are within half - an - hours ride.

The website address is: www.radnorrevivals.com and the telephone number is 07876 - 597697. Contacts are Bev, or Jack (her son).

The Euro K Club Lounge / Breakdown
« on: July 25, 2020, 05:04:33 pm »
A friend broke down (in his modern car) around 60 miles from home last week on a busy dual carriageway. He made it to the nearest service area and called his breakdown service (one of the major nationals) who attended fairly promptly, declared the car undriveable and said that they would call a transporter to move the car to my friend's home. he then went on to say that no - one could travel in the recovery vehicle due to Coronavirus restrictions, so my friend would need to make his own way home.

This is a problem that I, certainly had not thought of. My friend had received no warning from his service provider of this change to their operations, however I assume that it is likely to apply to all recovery services and if so, is quite a concern for those of us that venture far from home?

K1200 / K1300 Forum / K1300GT exhaust
« on: July 14, 2020, 05:06:08 pm »
I have a problem with the exhaust headers. When returning home on Saturday last I thought that the exhaust was louder than usual and upon close inspection yesterday, found that the headers have  pushed the weld out at the 2-1 junction.

I called the dealer today, quite prepared to buy new pipes as I assumed (correctly) that they are not a warranty item, however after booking me in for replacement on Thursday week he checked stock to find that there are none in the UK or Germany and, far worse still, the next due date for arrival of new parts is May 2021!

Does anyone have any ideas of where replacements might be found, even if only as a stop - gap measure? If not, has anyone successfully had repairs made to the existing pipes, if so where?

The throttle grip on my 2010 K1300GT has begun to stick slightly in the closed position at times. If the grip is released gently from the open position, this causes the idle to stay at 1500 rpm or more and if closed firmly, although the idle is then correct a definite "click" can be heard from the area to the rear of the cylinder head as it is reopened and there is a tightness before it releases.

The problem is intermittent, sometimes weeks pass and all is fine - at other times it happens all of the while.

Cables have not been adjusted, however I did check the free play by releasing the sleeve at the adjusters and there is around 3mm of free movement on the opening cable and 1-2mm on the closing cable before it activates. The cruise control works fine in all situations.

Does anyone have any ideas please?
