Hardly bling, but this hi-vis 'black in daylight, retro-reflective white in direct light' makes anything wearing it, or coverd in it, shine like a shitten back door in the moonlight as my dear old mother might not have said.

So, here's the question, has anyone used this on things like the back of their Sport Cases or panniers to make them show up in headlights?

And, more to the point, is it legal to show white retro-reflections to the rear and will it stop the eejits from seeing my brake lights, tail lights etc?

Brian (who knows nothing)

As I have grown older, I've learned that pleasing everybody is impossible, but pissing everyone off is a piece of cake.

Yeah! But can I use white retro-reflective panels on the back of my bike?

Brian,
I used a Wunderlich product sold by Nippy Normans for the pannier rears on my K13GT - Reflective pannier film - R1200R/RT/S/ST,K1200GT/1300GT - Part No: WUN-25100-000. Dull grey appearance in ambient light, and then a bright silver in the dark when it reflects the light. Good and easy to apply.  :)

Yup, that's the very same stuff!

There have been so many rear-enders on here recently (why can't folks type more carefully  ??? ) that I am looking various hi-viz solutions.

My concern is the lighting regs. I have seen lots of bikes with red dayglo on the back of their panniers and whilst that works it looks like Captain Sensible wafting down the road in front of you and I wouldn't want to look like that.

I was hoping there was a black version that showed red when lit but can't find anything.

Brian (who could just ride fast and not let anyone get behind him  8) )

After seeing this tread I looked online and found a set for my bike and ordered them.

It needs to reflect red on if on the rear, in the UK.

http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1989/1796/regulation/3/made
Near the bottom...

3) Material designed primarily to reflect light is, when reflecting light, to be treated for the purposes of these Regulations as showing a light, and material capable of reflecting an image is not, when reflecting the image of a light, to be so treated.

Unless it's a number plate, in which case it can/must be yellow. I did think a numberplate with the letters and numbers cut from ScotchLite 680 might be handy, say in case someone tried to photograph your bike using a flashgun.

Previous owner simply glued rectangular red reflectors to the back of my panniers.
I left them on as I doubt they would come off cleanly, and they must add some safety.
