Pannier keys - matching to bike key

I know, I know, so many questions. Sorry.

I have panniers keyed to my old bike, and I'd like to change them to the new bike.
I may do it myself - I can see a couple of example step-throughs on the web (but I remember Matt had a few hiccups doing his), or I can take it to a dealer.

However, the bit I don't understand:
- I have a black plastic key from the previous owner which also unlocks the panniers, even though the key is a different pattern. Hmm!

Anyone got an explanation?

Maybe I could just be lazy / cheapskate and get a couple of metal copies of the plastic one cut.

I don't see much of a problem having a separate key for the panniers, if you had Givi or another make of pannier you'de have a separate key.

Exactly my thoughts, Rae. I'm just confused as to how the plastic one AND the standard metal key both unlock the panniers.

Yes I suppose it's a bit of a conundrum, maybe the panniers had been re-keyed before.

perhaps when the wafers have been installed into the locks the full set haven't been used and the ones that have been used happen to coincide with both keys, I had similar on a top box that suited me as I could swap it between GT and RT

Just bloody fix it you idle devil...who the hell has the time to fart around finding yet another key to get to your waterproofs when it is hissing down.

Use the key to take the barrel out of the lock and re-jig it to match your new ignition key. If you can't get all the wafers to match by shuffling them around, just leave out the ones that you can't match.

And don't let head mechanic Matt's inability to do something dictate what you attempt

My K1200S had a different key for the panniers and I found it easier. I already carry a second key ring with the disk lock key, the lock and chain key and my front door key so having the pannier key on that was easy. Much easier than the current situation where I take the key out of the ignition and the alarm auto arms while I have the panniers open, going off if I'm a little enthusiastic shutting the lid. Can you yell I have to park in London?

know this is about BMW panniers but rekeying als works with givi  panniers to match a BMW key, it worked on my Kappa panniers witch are givi clones.

The plastic doesn't open the bike, no. So I guess someone left a tumbler or two out of the lock.

Latest progress:

1. Went to local town, but no locksmith (3 of them) could cut keys. You need a laser cutter, sir. There's no call for those round 'ere.

2. Came back, resolved to take up Brian's challenge instead.

Here's my trusty helper, trying to get into the pannier:



Screws to remove the lock+lever sub-unit:



Got the lock+lever sub-unit off the pannier:


And what the bits are:



Then looked for how to get the barrel out. No sign of any screws, etc.
Only thing I could see was what turned out to be a hinge/rod running from one side of the complete mechanism to the other, for all the levers/handles to pivot on:

Knocked the hinge/rod out with a thin screwdriver, and then stuff started moving. Hmm, there's stuff going on in there that I can't see, so how on earth am I going to be able to put it back together if I go any further. Time to chicken out. So I put the hinge/rod back in:

Not so easy, the handles no longer lined up, but eventually after fiddling, I managed to slide the hingle/rod back in.


And that's how it's staying for the time-being.

I looked online at various tutorials, but they all had easy access to the lock cylinder. That's the bit I'm missing.
My best guess is that there's some magic 'poke a hole with a bent paperclip' trick to release it, because I couldn't see any other way in, and the hinge rod just didn't feel right.

Let's wait for a being of higher intelligence then us to intervene.

The end lever furthest from the key is spring loaded and holds the barrel in place. If I remember you have to get at this lever and push against it and the barrel comes out complete with the key.

It helps if you can work out roughly where the end of the barrel would be (the barrel is about 25mm long), and the lever has to be depressed with a thin screwdriver inserted on the same plane as the key. If you can work out what I'm saying there is only one direction from which the screwdriver could be inserted.

If I remember correctly most of the handle assembly has to be dismantled.
